The paper analyses, in general, the safety implications of the increasing automation of complex technological systems. Automation changes the role of humans at the interface with technological systems, and implies that operation should rely more and more on software reliability, on human supervisory capacity and on organisational strength. The traditional risk assessment techniques have therefore to be extended to take into account these new factors. In the paper the trends of this extension are outlined.
