Mixed nitride fuel could be used in advanced liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactors. The difficulties of nitride fabrication have been overcome, without any significant modification of the equipment used in the classical oxide production route. Production of nitride fuel by the sol-gel process is also being studied. In-pile performances of the fuel at the beginning of life and at high burn-up are reported. Fuel dilution tests show that the nitride dissolves quickly and actinides are separated without any difficulty. The results are consistent with a PUREX-type process.
