Abstract

Detailed Mössbauer and neutron diffraction results are reported for NpBi, and related to those for other monopnictides NpX (X = N,P,As,Sb). The magnetic behaviour of NpBi confirms the general trend observed for the other Np monopnictides, i.e. an increase of the ordering temperature, ordered moment and isomer shift with increasing Np-Np distances. The magnetic interactions as well as the localised character of the 5f electrons increase from light to heavy pnictogen atoms. The type I triple-k structure is common for the U and Np antimonides and bismuthides, while the corresponding Pu compounds exhibit more complex behaviour. This result emphasises the role played by the mixing of the U or Np 5f electrons with the Sb(Bi) p-band.
