The CEC's MARIA programme (Methods for Assessing the Radiological Impact of Accidents) involved research which aimed to: - develop a new probabilistic accident consequence code; - acquire a better understanding of the limitations of current accident consequence assessment models, and - quantify the uncertainties associated with the model predictions. This research led to the development of the accident consequence code COSYMA (COde SYsten from MAria). The studies that have been undertaken in support of this development are summarised in these proceedings, together with indications of where further effort might most profitably be directed. Consideration is also given to related research directed towards the development of real-time decision support systems for use in off-site emergency management.
