Decontamination and dismantling of large plutonium-contaminated glove boxes
The objective of this research is to develop adequate techniques for the decommissioning and partial dismantling of large alpha-contaminated units and to demonstrate the feasibility of carrying out such a task within a fixed time schedule and with due consideration of safety and cost. The research covers three distinct tasks: - the partial in-situ dismantling (if required) and the conditioning of the glove boxes; - transportation, and - the final dismantling. The problems related to manipulating large glove boxes are listed, and the solution of building a "stiffening" frame around each glove box is described. The dismantling procedures are detailed. Results of the decontamination of a highly Pu-contaminated glove box with freon, and the preliminary CO(2) blasting tests on non-active samples are presented.
