Remote sensing, agricultural statistics, crop forecasting : The European Community's pilot projectFunded under: JRC-REMSENS 4C
This article describes the aims of the pilot project on remote sensing applied to the gathering of agricultural statistics. The aims are to determine and assess the area of cultivation given over to particular crops, to assess the levels of production in real time and to forecast this level of production. The programme is divided into seven areas of action: i) to follow the evolution of the main crops in a number of sample regions; ii) to monitor crops and yield factors; iii) to create yield forecast models; iv) to devise a means for rapid estimates of surface areas and yields; v) to create an advanced agricultural information system; vi) to carry out surveys on land, and vii) to consider future developments, such as the use of radar images transmitted by the European Ers-1 satellite. Most of the work is to be entrusted to private national organisations or companies, and other activities are being developed alongside the main project: files of information on wine and citrus fruit production and fraud control.
