3291 fault dip measurements from 122 coalfield faults have been collated and analysed. Fault Analysis Projection Systems (FAPS) software has been developed for the projection of faults onto vertical surfaces parallel to the fault strike, from interpretations of surface seismic reflection data. A further set of programs has been developed to facilitate collection and projection of fault data from mine plans. The enhanced understanding of the systematics of fault geometry and frequency is applied to practical mine management problems such as the calculation of fault displacements in seams above or below that in which data are available, lateral projection of faults within a seam, and calculation of fault position in a seam above or below the data. The treatment of displacements on segmented faults is described. An example is given of the construction and use of the "throw profile plot" for fault prediction.
