Preparation and characterisation of actinide containing materials
The actinide samples preparation and characterisation programme carried out at the Institute for Transuranium Elements focussed on: - single crystal growth of compounds with sodium chloride structure (monopnictides, monochalcogenides); - single crystal growth of Laves phases and AnX(3) intermetallics (with transition elements), and - crystal chemistry and single crystal growth of 111 and 122 compounds (with transition elements and Al, Ga, Si, Ge). Future plans involve the study of the crystal chemistry of compounds beginning with the ThMn(12) and Th(3)P(4) structure, and the building up of a facility to grow single crystals of 242Pu compounds. The samples are characterised by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, electron diffraction, metallography and dilatometry. A high field, low temperature facility for the determination of basic physical properties (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat) and a Mössbauer spectrometer are currently under construction.
