A European intercomparison of ultrasonic power measurements is being carried out. Stage 1 involving a 4 MHz transducer is reported here. The laboratories participating in this project are the National Physical Laboratory (NPL, United Kingdom), the Medical Technology Unit of TNO (The Netherlands) and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB, Germany). The quantity of interest is the electroacoustic radiation conductance G of the transducer when radiating into water at room temperature. The final G result, averaged from the measurements of all participants, is 45.64 microS. The deviations from this mean value are -3.4% for NPL, +0.2% for TNO and +3.2% for PTB. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed and proposals for future action are made. The 4 MHz transducer is found to be well-suited for the purposes of a power standard. There have been no indications of a temporal change since the transducer construction in 1984, and the radiation conductance is independent of the signal amplitude within the limits of repeatability. The published synthesis report is EUR 12681.
