Beam power calculation for the "SORGENTINA" neutron generator
A 14 MeV neutron generator producing a steady-state neutron flux greater than 1.0 E13 n/cm2/sec in a volume greater than 500 cm3 has been considered by the European Community for a neutron source (SORGENTINA) to provide significant materials data for the technological fusion research programme. Such a neutron generator will use a mixed deuterium and tritium accelerated ion beam to strike a solid target. The method of evaluating the neutron flux, the related irradiation volume and the beam characteristics of the generator to achieve this neutron flux are presented.
