Very few people would now dispute the fact that modern technology has reached a turning point and that profound changes are needed in order to ensure the survival of the human species. There is, however, no equally wide consensus over the suggestion that science, which has so far been the driving force of technological development, should undergo changes. Nowadays the main function of science is to study the pathologies of the industrial system, a task which creates new problems and requires new methods.
