Abstract

Neutron experiments on a single crystal of La(1.8)Sr(0.2)NiO(4) show that short-range two-dimensional correlations exist within the Ni-O planes. At low temperature they are of sufficient duration (less than 1.0 E-11 s) to appear in the elastic energy window of the spectrometer. Various physical models for the spin correlations are discussed, and calculations are also presented on an antiphase domain model, which qualitatively simulates the observations.
