Abstract

This report describes the work of the Institute for Safety Technology of the JRC during 1990. In the area of nuclear reactor safety studies, efforts concentrated on the analysis of phenomena which characterise highly improbable but very severe accidents for either light water or sodium cooled reactors. Work also continued on the European Accident Code, and the source term evaluation, and in the LOBI and FARO facilities. Other nuclear laboratory facilities now under construction are nearing completion. In the non-nuclear area, work was divided between industrial hazards, particularly the use of the FIRES facility, and reference methods for the evaluation of structural reliability.
