  • Implicit least-squares finite element schemes for multi-dimensional advection equations with source terms : Application to natural convection of air in square and circular cavities


Implicit least-squares finite element schemes are developed for advection equations with source terms. An analysis of the method is presented and compared with the Taylor-Galerkin scheme in numerical experiments. The least-squares approach produces results of comparable quality for the natural convection problems and, moreover, is unconditionally stable. Since the method is quite general and easy to formulate and program in a standard manner, it appears to be a promising alternative to the Petrov-Galerkin or Taylor-Galerkin approaches currently in use.
