Abstract

The report describes the preparation of 2 peanut butter reference materials and the certification of their individual aflatoxin B(1), B(2), G(1), G(2) and total aflatoxin contents (mass fraction). The reference material RM 385 was prepared from naturally contaminated peanuts, blended with uncontaminated material to achieve the desired aflatoxin concentrations. Details are given of the blending and canning procedure, and the tests to ensure homogeneity and stability of the material. The reference material RM 401 was prepared in a similar manner from an uncontaminated peanut butter. The certification exercise was carried out by 9 laboratories using a variety of extraction and clean-up procedures. Each used high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as the determinative stage, although operating under a variety of chromatographic conditions. The materials are intended for the verification of methods used to determine aflatoxins in nuts and nut products.
