This paper describes the driving forces, problems and current status of the standardisation of ceramic matrix composites. It is argued that major efforts are required for the standardisation of test methods to determine mechanical property data for continuous fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The two major problems that need to be overcome are the development of suitable testing techniques to measure relevant material properties, and the progress that is still necessary in materials science to enable successful standardisation of a number of test methods.
