Types of waste - problems and research
In its Directive 91/156/EEC of 18th March 1991, the Council of Ministers of the European Community instructed the Commission to compile, by 1st April 1993, a Community catalogue of all kinds of waste products. The catalogue must include all the lists and catalogues of the member states of the EEC, of the countries which belong to EFTA, the OECD catalogue, of EEC customs legislation, and of national and Community statistical offices. This difficult task requires an in-depth knowledge of all the various catalogues, a correct definition of the waste classification criteria, as well as a precise description of the various kinds of waste. Scientific research in the field of waste products based on advanced systems of chemical analysis is also required to study the environmental impact of pollutants, as well as to develop and use data processing systems.
