Concentrations of VOC in offices and complaints of the occupants
The paper gives concentrations of formaldehyde and VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in 10 European Parliament buildings. Two groups of offices, of maximum and minimum complaints regarding air quality respectively, have been singled out by means of a questionnaire distributed to all three thousand employees. The formaldehyde and VOC concentrations measured in the two groups of offices were not significantly different. On the basis of this result, the impact on human health or comfort of the above mentioned pollutants, at the concentrations measured, may be considered negligible. Complementary measurements made with diffusion samplers, carried out for one working week continuously and during working time only, show that activities carried out by employees can contribute substantially to the VOC pollution in offices.
