Mechanisms and interaction phenomena influencing releases in a low- and medium-level waste disposal system
This report presents the work carried out between 1986 and 1990 at the RisÝ National Laboratory as part of the third EC research programme on radioactive waste management. Topics in the area of waste product characterisation included leaching and volume stability of cemented ion-exchange resins, hydroscopic properties of cemented and bituminised radioactive waste, water uptake, swelling and ageing of bituminised products and the stability of nickel ferrocyanide in precipitation sludge. Studies of barrier material properties included the influence of pore structure on transport, healing of cracks, transport between thin plates and the structure of degraded cement paste. Finally, some integral experiments with migration of radioisotopes through different barriers were performed under various external conditions.
