Fracture toughness can be characterised by the critical stress intensity factor K(Ic). For ceramics, its determination according to ASTM : E 399-72, regardless of cost, is very complex. The utilisation of specimen geometries which permit stable crack growth have become popular. Good examples are the tests using Chevron notch specimens, which also allow the determination of da/dt versus K(I) curves.
