BCR projects in the field of workplace air monitoringFunded under: FP2-BCR 4
The BCR programme comprises projects to improve the accuracy of the determination of volatile organic compounds in workplace air by personal monitoring techniques based on reversible sorption. Sources of error are detected in a sequence of intercomparisons and technical discussion meetings. When excellent analytical performance is achieved, a reference material is certified. One project has already reached this stage (CRM 112-aromatic hydrocarbons on Tenax). Similar work is underway for aromatic hydrocarbons on charcoal, and for chlorinated hydrocarbons (thermal and solvent desorption). Sampling is studied in specially designed intercomparisons. Future projects will include compounds which have to be sampled as chemical derivatives (e.g. aldehydes, isocyanates), polar compounds, mixed phases, and inhalable aerosols.
