Dimensional diagnostics of rolled products forms part of the overall efforts of steel works to improve product competitiveness and plant productivity. To this purpose, better understanding of the phenomenon of rolling must be coupled with available information on dimensional characteristics of rolled products. Systematic, accurate dimensional monitoring using automated robot equipment can provide such information. The aim of this research was to develop a flexible cell for dimensional monitoring of the cross-section of long products rolled on Belval mill number II. Products of mill II are either beams rolled in universal housings or sheet-piles rolled in passes of two-high housings. The measuring cell is placed at the mill exit a short distance back from the hot saws. It provides full geometric details of the hot products as they are rolled and is accurate to within +/- 0.05 mm. It serves both to certify the dimensional quality of the product and to provide feedback for precise control of the rolling mill.
