Abstract

Experimental determination of the radial profile of X(e) by heat propagation analysis would suggest that the increased values of X(e) at the plasma edge may be the governing factor in the saturation of the energy confinement time with increasing density seen in deuterium. It would also suggest that a deterioration in electron confinement at the plasma boundary is the cause for the difference in energy confinement time between hydrogen and deuterium discharges.
