Abstract

The primary products from all direct coal liquefaction processes require further upgrading to become marketable products. The objective of this research programme was to optimise process conditions for the joint upgrading of petroleum oil fractions and oils from coal, obtained from the coal liquefaction plant at Bottrop (Germany). This involved: - defining and preparing suitable light and middle distillate fractions from petroleum and coal-derived oils; - preparing suitable blends, which were expected to represent future feedstock availabilities; - examining the behaviour of these feedstocks when subjected to refining (hydrotreating), hydrocracking and reforming under conditions within the limits of flexibility of commercial petroleum refineries; - characterising the qualities of intermediate and finished products and measuring their yields when pregnant, and - testing all sample qualities produced for application as transport and/or heating fuels.
