This publication contains a collection of scientific papers presented at an EEC workshop held in Valencia, Spain, in July 1987. The aim of the workshop was to analyse and discuss the causes, characteristics and implications of the process of desertification in southern Europe, in order to generate sound measures and strategies that could diminish the threat of desertification. Three major topics were discussed: - historical perspectives and characteristics of the Mediterranean environment related to desertification; - the present day situation of desertification in the different European countries affected, especially Spain, and - the control of desertification.
