Behaviour of crushed salt under the effect of a heat source in boreholes drilled in a salt mine
This report covers an entire research programme on crushed salt involving both laboratory work and in situ tests. The experiments were designed to reveal the thermomechanical interaction between rock-salt and crushed salt. The final stage of storing highly exothermic nuclear waste (French grade "C") is the infilling of galleries and shafts. With this in mind, the aim of the work was to gain a better understanding of what happens to cavities cut into rock-salt and backfilled with crushed salt. This is a detailed review of the methods employed, results obtained and difficulties encountered, enabling each operation to be followed from the inception of the test to the interpretation of the results.
