The ALARA principle states that "all exposures shall be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable, economic and social factors being taken into account". It is a simple concept, the idea behind it being widely used in nearly all spheres of life, i.e. to do the best one can under the given circumstances. This book aims to help define what is meant by "best" in the context of radiation protection. It describes a procedure that is useful in structuring an approach to any particular situation where a decision as to the best course of action is required. It also provides practical guidance on how the concept can be incorporated into radiation protection programmes.
