The primary aim of this study was the development of improved hydrogenation catalysts for coal-derived liquids. These catalysts would exhibit the high hydrogenation activity of metallic surfaces and a high degree of sulphur tolerance. Secondary aims of the project were to: - study the influence of a secondary metal on hydrogenation activity and sulphur tolerance of Group VIII metals; - study the effects of carrier doping on hydrogenation activity and sulphur poisoning characteristics of monometallic and bimetallic catalyst formulations, and - optimise hydrogenation catalysts in terms of their specific activity and sulphur tolerance.
