Abstract

In the second phase of the MIRAGE project (1985-1989), a significant R&D effort was devoted to improving the quality and potential of the calculation tools that are needed to predict the behaviour of the geosphere confining an underground nuclear waste repository. A serious effort was also made to apply these tools to real site-specific data, and to attempt to validate them. The work was split between cost-shared contracts with several institutions of the member countries, and in-house R&D at the JRC, Ispra. In this paper the main features and results of this research are summarised.
