The report begins with an explanation of the role of cork in the context of Community policy, illustrating the importance of this study for the achievement of Community objectives in the fields of industrial competitiveness, cohesion between the peripheral and central regions of the Single European Market, use of agricultural land for the production of non-food crops and environmental protection. The report continues with a definition of the aim of the study, which was to provide a complete picture of the technological R&D activities associated with cork production, excluding any studies relating to the biological and forestry aspects, aiming to study the lesser known applications of cork and basing the work on bibliographical research. A list is provided of all the uses of cork other than for bottle tops. The trends in patents are then examined and a list is given of industries and institutes involved in active research and development of cork.
