The data discussed in this work concern the concentrations of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb and Cu in the Po river delta, in rivers to the north-west side of the Adriatic sea, in the marine area influenced by the Po waters up to 20 miles offshore of the river mouth, and in a large area of pelagic waters. The results indicate that the marine deltaic area appears to act as a sink for the heavy metals as well as a potential source for their release. Moreover an appreciable correlation has been found between the concentrations of Pb and Cu in the particulate phase and the total suspended matter.
