With the aim of studying the behaviour of plasma spray refractory coatings, Al(2)O(3) and W-5%Re layers were deposited on Cu and AISI 316 specimens. Disruptions were simulated by means of an electron beam on both bare and coated specimens. The performance of the coatings was characterised in terms of the degree of melting of the base material. The melting depth was compared for bare and protected specimens. The main result of this study is that coatings offer a valid protection only if their thickness is sufficient to prevent a large melting of the base material, in which case vapour bubbles or large cavities are produced.
