A laser-produced plasma is an intense X-ray source of high brightness which is competitive with electron synchrotron sources. The potential of this source for opacity studies of cold and hot dense matter is illustrated by results from experimental work recently performed. Measurements of the absorption coefficient of cold and radiation heated materials (carbon and gold) in a temperature range up to about 150 eV are presented.
