LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) is a time of flight backscattering technique used in plasma diagnostics. This report reviews the existing JET LIDAR system, discusses developments in solid-state, visible, near IR and other lasers, and their possible LIDAR applications, deals with fast detectors and analysis techniques and outlines possible designs of LIDAR scattering systems for new fusion machines.
