Studies of partitioning and transmutation at the JRC include research into actinide and fission product separation and transmutation. The objective of these research activities is to draw up suitable flow-sheets for HLLW partitioning (especially actinides and technetium) through the implementation of a coordinated research programme between four European laboratories. A number of potential extractants are to be tested using conventional solvent extraction techniques. A significant part of the research programme is devoted to the setting up of an efficient separation process between trivalent actinides and lanthanides, which can compete with the classical Talspeak process. The two basic approaches to be considered are the selective complexation of trivalent actinides in an aqueous phase and their selective extraction in an appropriate organic solvent. This programme will involve the synthesis of new organic extractants.
