Solvent emissions from industrial and private use
The emission of solvents into the air is regarded as one of the main sources contributing to the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in Europe. The CEC intends to reduce VOC emissions into the air in specified sectors. This document describes solvent use and opportunities for minimising the VOC emissions which result from surface cleaning and degreasing activities. It includes a description of the industrial sector concerned and its place in European industry. The main processes and techniques, solvent consumption data and composition, as well as the environmental impact of cleaning activities, are presented. A possible strategy for solvent emission reduction and the costs of abatement techniques are discussed. Recommendations are made for a directive for VOC emission reduction.
