Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Abstract

The Community Documentation Centre on Industrial Risk has as its objectives the collection of safety related documentation and the production of review publications. Studies on lessons learned from major accidents in the Community member countries, lessons learned after emergencies and a comparison of the national approaches to the safety report have already been published. This volume is the first to compare regulations and guidelines for handling and storing a specific substance - LPG. LPG is a dangerous substance according to the definitions given in the SEVESO-Directive. Its selection does not imply that it is more dangerous than any of the other substances either listed in Annexes II and III, or classified as dangerous according to the criteria of Annex IV of this Directive. It mainly reflects the fact that it is widely used all over the Community (installations handling or storing LPG covered by the requirements of the SEVESO-Directive are to be found in all member countries) and, consequently, is involved very frequently in accidents, as shown in the review of the accidents notified up to now in MARS.
