Abstract

There is a requirement for radioactive waste producers to ensure the integrity of the cemented wasteform canisters they produce. Presently available corrosion monitoring and NDT techniques are not readily applicable to cemented canisters. Acoustic emission is a promising technique for monitoring degradation of a cemented metal-containing wasteform from the outside of a canister. This report describes work carried out to investigate acoustic emission as a monitor of corrosion and degradation of such wasteforms where the waste is a potentially reactive metal.
