There is a growing number of sophisticated tools available to the roadmaster, which successfully combine various new and leading-edge technologies. Blending the expertise of the weather forecasters with modern environmental monitoring and display systems provides the roadmaster with the best possible means of optimising the latest hardware and management techniques available. COST 309 deals specifically with road weather and winter maintenance, particularly with respect to the work of local road authorities, and combines the expertise of meteorologists, road engineers and instrument manufacturers. The project has the following objectives: (i) to explore the most effective methods of detecting, forecasting and mapping hazardous weather-related road conditions and of taking action to improve their effects; (ii) to quantify the costs and benefits of such methods and actions; (iii) to recommend areas where common research can be carried out and common operational standards established.
