The work described in Part A of the research project was continued and completed. The prototype of the mobile data terminal MDT was finally completed. When the explosion-proofing of the converted A4-format computer was tested, it became evident that major alterations were still needed. For reasons of economy, a more recent, even smaller hand-held computer with better technical specifications was chosen. This model also proved more suitable for conversion to an explosion-proof terminal and has now been approved and used underground. To link the hand-held data terminal HDT to the underground data network, a prototype acoustic coupler was developed, although so far, users have shown little interest in using it. The modem for data transfer via dedicated, secure telecommunication cables, in accordance with interface standard RS 485, was given operational approval and performed well when tested in use.
