On the basis of pilot-scale studies two immobilisation technologies, namely vitrification and stabilisation/solidification, seem to have gained importance. The former, in spite of its proven efficiency, is extremely costly and has not been used on a commercial scale as yet. On the other hand stabilisation/solidification is now widely used because of its cost effectiveness and simplicity. This report overviews the development to date of this technology, key parameters where knowledge is limited and factors which can enhance the future utilisation.
