Development of a system for analysis of surface cleanliness by dissolution and ionic chromatography

Steel plants need a good knowledge of surface cleanliness. The purpose of this research is to develop a system which links a dissolution cell with ionic chromatography. The lixiviation of superficial compounds has been performed with acid fluids, obtaining extraction yields of greater than 90%. Anion analysis presents little problem in neutral solutions but many perturbations are present with acid solution (mineral or organic acids). To resolve these problems three procedures were developed: preconcentration, concentration gradient, and constant elution with high capacity columns. This system is able to perform surface analysis of a product at an intermediate stage of the production cycle in less than 20 mins. Several different applications have been developed, such as: - control of the efficiency of washing after pickling, - quantitative analysis of phosphated steel sheet, - determination of the amounts of zinc and nickel in the electrodeposition baths.
