Abstract

In future, competitive advantage in manufacturing industry will be derived from flexibility rather than from low costs and mass production. It will be important for business to reduce product development time and to increase responsiveness to customer demand. This study considers proposals for future EC research in the light of these changes in industry. It concludes that the existing emphasis on technological R&D is wrong and that a major shift in research policy is required, towards a balanced manufacturing response to these new market conditions, addressing the issues of organisation and people as well as technology.
