Agrometeorological aspects of forecasting yields of potato within the EC
Part of the EC Pilot Project on agricultural statistics systems relates to the development of agrometeorological models for regional crop state monitoring and for quantitative yield predictions on a national scale. The data required for developing and running these models refer to items such as: - statistical time series of cultivated surfaces and yields; - statistical data on the geographical distribution of the cultivated varieties; - regionalised phenological crop calendars; - the physiological and environmental requirements of the crop; - the cultivation conditions of the crop; - the administrative boundaries or homogeneous spatial units where the crop is grown. This report provides a literature and expert-knowledge based inventory of the information that is available for the potato crop growing in the EC. There are three main sections: (i) general agronomic and production data and information; (ii) the physiological and environmental requirements of potato and (iii) a summary and comparison of the published models which relate potato development and yield with weather. The inventory is compiled in such a way that it is compatible with standard meteorological data, a geographic information system holding a 1:1,000,000 soils map of Europe, the EUROSTAT statistical data and information derived from satellite imagery.
