Abstract

A seismic analysis of the plant considered in the Benchmark Exercise on the Major Hazard Analysis Project has been performed by four participating groups. Analysis of seismic source is often hampered by lack of availability of adequate data relating to specific sites. Where accelerograms are recorded on site, there are still difficulties regarding the proper application. Finite element discretisation is generally accepted as the most accurate method of seismic analysis for complex structures. Considerations of seismic impact on the specific structure suggest that the inner metal tank is the most critical component, but that more research is also needed concerning the foundations, piles and outer concrete shell. Accurate seismic risk calculations would require due consideration of the uncertainties in the failure criteria (incorporation of deterministic failure modes in a probabilistic risk assessment, yield strength distribution, stress distribution, etc.) and the effect of the variability of the filling height.
