Investigation of the connection between test results for volume stability achieved in the laboratory and in-service behaviour of LD slagsFunded under: ECSC-STEELRES 7C
In a previous research project supported by the ECSC, the Forschungsgemeinschaft Eisenhüttenschlacken developed a test method for the assessment of the volume stability of steelwork slags in the laboratory (steam test). This method makes it possible to carry out testing which is relatively close to in-service conditions and which provides results within a reasonable time. This is achieved by accelerating hydration, in particular of free calcium (CaO free), at elevated temperatures. The aim of this investigation was to compare steam test results with the actual behaviour of the slags under in-service conditions. To this end a test tract was built using LD slags from two steelmakers with different free calcium contents and weathering times in base courses with no binder.
