Heat pumps have the potential for large energy savings, since their efficiency ranges from 110% for electric heat pumps to 150% for absorption and internal combustion engine driven pumps. They are also attractive environmentally in terms of reduced emission of CO(2) and other pollutants. For various reasons, however, heat pumps have not been widely used in Europe. As part of a concerted action on heat pumps, a workshop was organised to discuss a possible strategy for the development of the heat pump market and industry in Europe. Topics covered areas such as environmental aspects, applications of heat pumps in buildings and in industry, current experience, R&D and new heat pump technologies.
