Flotation of a sub-bituminous coal
Carbosulcis S.p.A. has carried out nine tests of industrial flotation of the Sulcis sub-bituminous coal with deslimed feed. The technical results of the tests were very positive, having obtained a concentration index of about 0.55 with a consumption of reagents five times lower than the values registered in the laboratory with feed that had not been deslimed. Considering the physical-chemical characteristics of the Carbosulcis standard raw coal and the planned production of 2,600,000 t/y ROM, a recovery of washed coal in the flotation section equal to about 37,000 t can be calculated, but of a lower quality than the production target. As the quality of the coal is lower than the contractual specifications, it is necessary to produce coarse coal having a higher calorific value, with consequent loss of yield. It is therefore deemed unjustifiable from an economic point of view to build a flotation section into the new preparation plant.
