Adaptation of reinforced concrete panels to support stone drifts of over 4.20 m diameter
This research work had three objectives: - adapting the use of a Bouygues tunnelling machine in heading stone drifts for as wide a range of conditions as possible; - development of new concrete arch stones; - development of new equipment for positioning and manipulation of arch stones. The report describes the tunnelling machine and the modifications made to it and presents the results obtained at a number of different sites. Then various possible types of arch stone are discussed and tests carried out on the various constituents described. The third part of the report is devoted to a newly commissioned prototype for position of the supports. Its performance is considered to be satisfactory.
