A summary of the projects carried out within the research programme "Wood, including cork, as a renewable raw material, pulp and paper" is presented. The overall objectives of this programme were: - to increase the physical and economic availability of wood and its derivatives; - to use and develop new technology to reduce the costs of production, transformation and manufacture of wood and its products, and to reduce the losses inherent in the different phases of processing wood; - to enhance the quality of wood and its derivatives, including the development of new materials. The specific objective relating to pulp and paper was to improve the utilisation of Community paper and board making raw material resources by better use of currently neglected or wasted resources and enhanced use of those currently used. Papers are presented on the following subjects: CTMP from hardwoods, bleaching and yellowing of high yield pulps, new developments in high yield pulping, waste paper treatments, and chemical pulping, by-products and pigments.
